Dentalia shell bracelet (or hair-tie), Nez Perce

Summary:
Made by a male member of the Nez Perce Tribe 1840-1845. Acquired by Henry Spalding and sent to Dudley Allen. Purchased by the Nez Perce Tribe from the Ohio Historical Society in 1996.
Description:

The object includes 4 sections with 5 shells each, glass beads, and thick bison hide leather spaces. The five spacers are painted in vermillion ochre with the center one having two of three original brass tacks in place. The glass beads are strung with location at the small end only on each dentalia shell. May also be used on a cradle board or hair tie, however soiled condition indicates that the item was likely worn as a bracelet.
