Cultural Narrative:
Seated: Tamootssu, Lawyer, and Jason. The standing white men are unidentified. These Nez Perces, together with Utsinmalikhin, who died under mysterious circumstances in Washington, D.C. before this picture was taken, negotiated the treaty of 1863, which was never recognized by hinmatóoyalahtq’it (Chief Joseph) or the other Lower Nez Perce leaders. Taken from note on the back of the photo: Bogardus, Photographer. New York, 1863. Note included in file says that the photo may have been taken in 1868.
