Cultural Narrative:
The battle of Lamáta (White Bird Canyon) occurred following several Salmon River raids that alerted General Howard, who then dispatched Capt. Perry with ninety-nine men, mounts, camping equipment, and three days rations. Capt. Perry's orders were to guard the towns of Cottonwood and sáyxsaykiin (Grangeville), however he received information about the Nez Perce camped at Lamáta (White Bird) and decided to pursue the tribe.
