Cultural Narrative: 

This is a Yakama basket. We know this because we’ve seen this defined line before. It’s got all the loops on the top, for ties. 1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8-9-10-11. Eleven loops, twelve inches tall. It’s got a dark line on top and a dark line on the bottom. It either has Salmon Gill or Quail Topknot. Salmon Gill is the design. And then the loops are after Klickitat style. It wasn’t used. It may have been ordered by a patron or made for some occasion. But it is fully covered. That’s the first time I’ve seen the body of a basket fully imbricated with light colored cedar. And then we have Salmon Gill or Quail Topknot design within all of that full imbrication. When you look inside, you can see it’s all red cedar. Somebody went through a lot of work covering the whole body of the basket, not only with the design but with the background. Vivian Adams
