Woman's Beaded Bag

Rectangular, flat, fully beaded (one side) bag. Yellow, green, black, red and white, geometric design on grey background done in flat stitch technique on brown cotton textile. Lined with black and beige textile. Buckskin back and handles. Beaded edges., length: 9 1/4"; width: 8 1/4",

Cultural Narrative:

This is more modern, but i'm not sure how old the beads are. I don't think they are the old, old types. The old beads wouldn't shine like this, these beads are more modern probably after 1930. It is well used, some beads are missing and the strap is worn in. The yellow and white beads look older. This is smoked, probably deer or buck hide, backing. They used the leftover buckskin materials inside out. They haven't scraped off the hide you can see the spots inside, but that is ok. The geometric designs are probably trying to copy a corn husk bag. Elaine Emerson
